COXE, Henry Octavius (1811-1881) British Museum 1833; Bodleian Library 1838-1881 (DL 1838, CL 1860)
In 1860 Bodley was old, inconvenient and overcrowded. Coxe made it much more accessible and useful, notably by producing a vast new general catalogue, modelled on that of the BM, with supplementary registers, inventories and calendars. Dean Burgon, of 'rose red city' fame, described him as the 'large hearted librarian' and he had indeed become one of the most popular figures in the Oxford of his day. He was the LA's second President (1879-1880).
